Trade-in works exactly like a deposit — reduces what you finance.
WesBank typical offer ≈ 12.25% — Currently prime + 2% (SA prime is 10.25%, May 2026). Vehicle finance typically prices at prime + 1% to prime + 4%.
60 months is the SA mid-point. Longer term = lower monthly, more interest, longer time underwater on the loan.
Defers part of the loan to a final lump sum. Lowers the monthly but you still pay interest on the balloon balance every month — and you owe the lump sum at the end of the term.

Uses the standard amortisation-with-residual formula. Excludes comprehensive car insurance (typically R800–R2,200/month, required by all SA banks for financed vehicles) and any tracker subscription. Most SA vehicle finance is variable-rate — your actual instalment will rise or fall when SARB changes the repo rate. Try the affordability calculator to see the price you actually qualify for.

About WesBank, a division of FirstRand Bank Limited
WesBank is the dominant SA vehicle finance brand and the FirstRand group's specialist VAF division. By volume it finances close to one in three new and used cars sold on credit in South Africa each year, and runs the in-dealership finance desk at most major franchised motor groups.
WesBank's edge: dealer integration. The on-site finance and insurance (F&I) desk at most SA dealerships is staffed by WesBank consultants who can structure a deal in 30 minutes — deposit, trade-in, balloon, term, instalment, GAP cover and tracker, all in one signature. The trade-off: dealer-floor finance often isn't the cheapest. Walking the same deal to MFC or Standard Bank VAF for a competing quote routinely shaves 0.25–0.50% off the rate.

WesBank vehicle finance — frequently asked questions
What rate does WesBank charge on vehicle finance?
WesBank does not publish VAF rates — every offer is individualised. Based on 2026 SA dealership finance practice, WesBank's typical offer to an average buyer with a 10% deposit on a new car at 60–72 months sits at prime + 1.5% to prime + 2.5% (so 11.75–12.75% at the current 10.25% prime). Strong applicants — high earners with 20%+ deposits, clean credit, short terms — can negotiate down to prime + 0.5% (10.75%). Used cars and weaker credit can push to prime + 4% or higher. The calculator above defaults to prime + 2% (12.25%), the realistic mid-market WesBank offer.
Should I take WesBank dealer-floor finance or shop around?
Dealer-floor WesBank is the path of least resistance — the F&I desk has all your paperwork, the deal structures itself, and you drive away the same day. The cost: that convenience usually carries a 0.25–0.75% rate premium versus shopping the same application around to MFC, Standard Bank VAF, Absa, and Nedbank in parallel. On a R350,000 loan over 60 months, a 0.5% rate difference is roughly R5,500 over the life of the loan. Worth shopping if you have a couple of days; not worth it if you need the car this weekend.
What's the difference between WesBank Instalment Sale and Lease?
An Instalment Sale agreement transfers ownership to you progressively as you pay — you own the car at the end. A Lease (also called a Full-Maintenance Lease at WesBank) keeps WesBank as the legal owner; you have use of the car for the term and either return it, refinance, or buy it for the residual at the end. Instalment Sale suits private buyers (cleaner ownership, you can sell early). Lease suits VAT-registered businesses (the lease payment is fully expensable; on Instalment Sale only the interest portion is). Most private SA buyers should default to Instalment Sale.
Does WesBank offer balloon payments on used cars?
WesBank offers balloons on new cars and on certified used cars under 3 years old. Beyond that, the residual market value at term-end becomes too uncertain for WesBank to underwrite a balloon — the bank would be exposed to negative equity if the used car depreciates faster than expected. For older used cars (4+ years), expect a fully amortising loan with no balloon option.
How long does WesBank take to approve vehicle finance?
Pre-approval via the WesBank app is fast — typically minutes for existing FirstRand customers, an hour or two for new applicants pending an ITC credit check. Final approval at the dealership (with the vehicle identified and a signed offer-to-purchase) is usually same-day for a clean credit profile, 1–3 days if there are queries. The car can be delivered as soon as final approval is in place — there's no equivalent of the bond-registration delay that affects home loans.
