How to use this calculator
Enter your gross monthly salary (the figure before PAYE tax and UIF are deducted — what appears on your employment contract). Then set your hours per week using the slider. The calculator converts to an hourly rate using the standard formula: annual gross ÷ annual hours.
The BCEA standard working week is 45 hours (9h × 5 days). Most corporate and office roles are contracted to 40 hours. Part-time roles vary — adjust the slider to match your actual hours.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my hourly rate from my monthly salary?
Multiply your monthly gross salary by 12 to get your annual gross. Then divide by your annual hours (hours per week × 52). For example: R30,000/month × 12 = R360,000 ÷ (40h × 52) = R173.08/hour.
How many hours per week is standard in South Africa?
The Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) sets the maximum ordinary working hours at 45 hours per week (9 hours per day for a 5-day week, or 8 hours per day for a 6-day week). Most office workers are contracted to 40 hours per week. Hours beyond the BCEA threshold must be paid as overtime.
Is my hourly rate calculated on gross or net salary?
Your hourly rate is typically quoted on gross salary — before PAYE tax and UIF deductions. If you want to know your net hourly rate (what you actually take home per hour), use the PAYE calculator first to find your net monthly salary, then use that figure in this calculator.
How do I convert an hourly rate to a monthly salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week, then multiply by 52 (weeks per year), then divide by 12 (months). For example: R200/hour × 40h × 52 ÷ 12 = R34,667/month gross.
