Frequently asked questions

What is a pro rata salary?

A pro rata salary is a partial salary calculated for employees who work less than a full month — typically because they started or resigned mid-month. 'Pro rata' is Latin for 'in proportion'. The payment is proportional to the number of days worked relative to the total calendar days in the month.

How is pro rata salary calculated in South Africa?

The standard method used by most South African payroll systems is: (Monthly gross salary ÷ total calendar days in the month) × number of days worked. For example, if you start on the 15th of a 30-day month and earn R30,000/month: R30,000 ÷ 30 × 16 days = R16,000 pro rata.

Are weekends included in pro rata calculations?

Yes — most South African employers calculate pro rata pay using calendar days (including weekends and public holidays), not working days only. This is the standard method used by SARS-compliant payroll software. A small number of employers use working days — check your employment contract or HR policy.

Is pro rata pay taxed at a different rate?

No. Pro rata pay is taxed at exactly the same PAYE rates as a full month's salary. Your employer annualises your monthly gross (including the pro rata amount) and applies the relevant tax bracket. A lower pro rata pay in your first or last month typically results in less PAYE being deducted.

Does pro rata apply to leave pay and bonuses?

Yes — leave pay, annual bonuses, and performance bonuses are typically also prorated based on the portion of the year worked. For example, if you worked 8 months of a 12-month year, you are entitled to 8/12 of your annual leave and may receive 8/12 of any contractual annual bonus.
