How the distance calculator works

The tool runs in two modes. For roughly 100 high-traffic corridors — Joburg ↔ Cape Town, Cape Town ↔ Durban, the Garden Route segments, the Drakensberg passes — the driving distance is a verified value taken from Google Maps in May 2026 and cross-checked against the existing /drive calculator data. These pairs are flagged with the road number and link through to the full toll-and-fuel breakdown.

For pairs not in the verified table, the calculator falls back to the Haversine flight distance between the two towns' lat/lon coordinates, multiplied by an empirical winding factor of 1.18. That factor is the long-run median ratio between driving and straight-line distance across all SA highways — close enough for trip-planning, but flagged in the result with an “Estimate” badge so you know the number isn't Google-Maps-perfect.

The fuel cost is a flat estimate: (km ÷ 100) × 7.5 L × R 25.58 per litre. The 7.5 L/100km baseline is what a typical mid-size petrol sedan burns on a long-haul cycle. For exact per-vehicle costs across 42 South African vehicles — including diesels, hybrids and EVs — switch to the road trip cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the distance?

For our 100+ verified corridors, the driving distance is sourced directly from Google Maps and cross-checked against AA South Africa, with an accuracy of about ±2%. For pairs that aren't in the verified table, we calculate the straight-line distance between the two towns using the Haversine formula and multiply by 1.18 — the empirical median ratio between road and straight-line distance across SA highways. The estimated value is typically within ±15% of the actual driving distance, but it doesn't know about specific detours, mountain passes or unpaved sections, so check Google Maps if you need a route plan rather than a rough number.

How is the drive time calculated?

Drive time is derived from the driving distance assuming an average speed of 95 km/h — a realistic long-haul highway average for South African N-roads after factoring in fuel stops, single-lane stretches and the 100/120 km/h speed-limit mix. For city-to-city trips longer than ~600 km the calculator's drive time will line up closely with Google Maps' estimate; for short hops under 100 km the actual time can be longer than the calculator suggests because urban traffic and stop-start driving aren't modelled.

How is the fuel cost worked out?

Fuel cost = (driving distance ÷ 100) × 7.5 L × R25.58/L. The 7.5 L/100km consumption is a deliberately conservative baseline — typical of a mid-size petrol sedan like a VW Polo, Hyundai i20 or Toyota Starlet on a long-haul cycle. R25.58/L is the inland 95 ULP price effective 5 August 2026 (DMPR). For an exact per-vehicle cost across 42 SA vehicles — including diesels, hybrids, EVs and bakkies — use the road trip cost calculator at /drive, which also adds the toll fees for any of the 45 routes we cover.

Why isn't every small town listed?

The autocomplete is restricted to ~120 SA towns where we have verified lat/lon and where the search demand is meaningful. We deliberately excluded smaller dorpies for two reasons: first, programmatic small-town distance pages are a known SEO failure mode in this niche (one competitor has 100+ such pages and gets ~600 monthly visits total). Second, including them would dilute the autocomplete with low-relevance options. If you want a town we don't list, calculating the distance from the nearest larger town we do list will be within a few kilometres in most cases.

Does the calculator include toll fees?

No — this tool is purely about distance, drive time and fuel cost. SA toll fees vary significantly by route (R0 on the Garden Route, R359 on Joburg → Beit Bridge), so we keep them on the dedicated road trip cost calculator at /drive. When the pair you pick matches a verified /drive route, you'll see a "See full toll & fuel cost" link below the distance result that takes you straight to the trip calculator with the route pre-loaded. For toll-free corridors (parts of the Garden Route, the entire Eastern Cape N2) the distance + fuel here is the full picture.

How is this different from the /drive calculator?

The /drive calculator is a per-route, per-vehicle trip cost tool — it covers 45 specific N-road corridors with full mainline toll-gate breakdowns and exact fuel cost for any of 42 SA vehicles. This distance calculator is broader and lighter: any pair of ~120 SA towns, instant distance + drive time, with a generic fuel-cost estimate. Use this one when you want a quick answer to 'how far is X from Y' for a town pair we don't have a /drive route for, or when you don't care about exact toll/vehicle modelling.

Why is the estimated distance bigger than what Google shows?

If you're seeing an estimate (the amber 'Estimate' badge, not the verified-source label), you're getting Haversine flight distance × 1.18. The 1.18 factor is the long-run median across SA highways but specific corridors can be lower — coastal stretches like the N2 between Mossel Bay and George run almost dead straight, with an actual ratio closer to 1.05. For those, our estimate will be biased high. Conversely, mountain passes (Sani, Cogmanskloof) push the ratio above 1.30, so we'll under-estimate. The verified table covers all the corridors where Semrush volume is meaningful, so most common queries don't hit the estimator.

What towns and cities are covered?

121 SA towns across all nine provinces — every metro (Joburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London, Bloemfontein), every provincial capital, every major coastal town (Hermanus, Knysna, Plett, Mossel Bay, Jeffreys Bay, Margate, Richards Bay), and the highest-volume tourist nodes (Stellenbosch, Paarl, Sun City via Rustenburg, Sabi-area via White River and Hazyview). Border towns are also included (Beit Bridge via Musina, Komatipoort, Zeerust). If you're looking for a town that isn't in the autocomplete, picking the nearest larger town listed will give you a distance within a few kilometres.
