The official SAPS salary scale places the lowest Band A constable notch at approximately R226,188/year (~R18,849/month). Entry pay varies slightly depending on qualifications and placement. Constables can earn toward R25,000/month with experience through annual notch progression within Band A.

What is the highest rank in SAPS?

The highest rank in the South African Police Service is National Commissioner (equivalent to General). There is currently one National Commissioner. Deputy National Commissioners hold the rank of Lieutenant General. These officers earn R90,000–R130,000+/month gross.

Do SAPS officers get housing allowances?

Yes. SAPS members receive a housing allowance (currently R1,320/month for members not provided with official accommodation) in addition to their basic salary. This is included in the figures above. Members who live in SAPS-provided housing receive a reduced or no housing allowance.

How long does it take to be promoted from constable to sergeant?

Promotion from constable to sergeant typically requires a minimum of 3 years' service, a satisfactory performance rating, and a vacancy in the sergeant post structure. In practice, promotions can take 4–7 years due to the SAPS post structure freezes and the number of applicants per post.

Do SAPS members have a pension?

Yes. All SAPS members are members of the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF). Both the employee and the government contribute to the fund. Members who retire after qualifying service receive a defined benefit pension. Early exit or resignation results in a once-off gratuity payment.
