About Wilge Toll Plaza

The Wilge River (an Afrikaans name meaning "willow river") drains a large part of the Free State highveld and feeds into the Vaal River system. The N3 crosses this river system in the broad agricultural flatlands between Villiers and Warden — an area of maize and soya farming. The toll plaza here is operated by N3TC under the same 30-year BOT concession that covers the full Johannesburg-to-Cedara section. This section of the N3 is characterised by long straight stretches across the highveld before the road begins to climb toward the Drakensberg escarpment.
